Which sex
Feb 1st, 2010 at 12:00pm

Now, I know I should know this but I am doubting my judgement today.....can someone tell me how to tell the difference between a gander and a goose (Ebden Adults). I used the judgement of the ganders having thicker necks but am not sure....there has been a lot of fighting and I am not sure if I dont have more ganders than I thought.

Can anyone tell me of any other ways to tell the difference other than vent sexing as I am not strong enough to do this myself. Undecided

Hi

I keep geese and sympathise with you as I know sexing of them can be very difficult.  You have to study them very carefully and watch their behaviour as the ganders will usually start to fight each other as the breeding season approaches.  I have even known two ganders to be very friendly with each other and have us believe they are a pair only to find out later that they were both ganders.  I usually find that the females are generally a lot quieter and keep themselves to themselves more. The only sure way is to wait and see who lays the eggs.  Good luck with them.

Regards

Thanks Janet....I am not going mad then?
I rehomed two of them Monday as they were fighting such a lot but now that leaves me with four in total (girls and boys) but went to let them out this morning only to find that one goose (I think it is a female as very thin neck and unthreatening)had been viciously attacked and nearly stripped of feathers on head and back. It seems to be in shock and very cold so it is spending the night in my downstairs toilet but I dont really know what to do now as dont really have anywhere to fence off to keep it seperately. Could let it free-range but then it will be lonely and at risk of fox attack. Any ideas?

Oh I am sorry to hear about your injured goose.  It is unusual for the females to be attacked  by a gander unless something else has attached it like a rat for instance. Could you put up a partition in their hut to seperate them so they dont fight.  They should be ok outside in the daytime together providing they have enough room to get away from each other.  Mine freerange all together in the day and have the odd argument but nothing too serious but the ganders are kept seperate in thier huts at night so are unable to fight with each other.  They have the females for company.

I hope they calm down soon perhaps they are just trying to sort our who is boss.

Regards

Janet

I have put the injured goose in our dog run as a temporary measure and the gander rushed right across the large garden to try and attack it through the bars then went on to attack one of my friends when she came out of the back door.

As a newcomer to the art of goose keeping I just wanted to reassure you that your posts are appreciated even though I have nothing to contribute.
