Gold duckwing blue welsummers
Feb 8th, 2010 at 8:54pm

yes as stated... sounds very silly, but i would love to have a go at creating some blue based gold duckwing welsummers. its going to be hard to try and get the yellow legs but id love to give it a try. the basics i need at 1st is clean yellow legs, no white feathers, and a brown peppering over the blue on the chest, beetle green wing coverts and tail, red ear lobes , no black streeks in with the gold and the famous brown egg.

what obviously springs to mind is the copper marans and the wyandottes, but there body shape is a bit to big. anyone have any other good suggestions for this experiment

leghorns are getting close to the right colour, but working far away from the colour of the egg and ear lobes. going to have to keep crossing and keeping a log

Some years ago I set out on a project to create a strain of Blue Silver Duckwing Welsummers. I used a Blue Jersey Giant to introduce the blue gene and had no problem selecting for both yellow legs and brown eggshell in the second and subsequent generations.
For me the struggle has been to get rid of red shoulder patches in the males and seven years on this is still ongoing. This was presumably caused by the accidental introducxtion of autosomal red from the JG ancestor.
You are in the position that this is OK because you are develping Blue Gold Duckwing Welsummers. Once you have introduced the blue gene then you just cross and backcross to Welsummers to recover type. I would avoid using Leghorns because it can be hard to get back to pure red lobes. A Blue Wyandotte gives purity for red lobes and yellow legs and by selecting for single combed offspring then you eradicate the rose comb for ever.

Yeh. Gold Duckwing is one of those colour names that means different things to different people. Some folk use the term to mean gold rather than silver. Others distinguish Red Duckwing, Silver Duckwing and Gold Duckwing. Yet more mean it to mean Yellow Duckwing.
I assume that from the above comments re Leghorns that badger means to use the word as in not silver duckwing as opposed to a diluted form of red duckwing.
                    But may be wrong! Huh

well of the top of my head i think they are called Gold Duckwing in the standards book... may be rong be im pretty sure. i have silver welsummers aswell, so to get the cream i could always make a impure silver welsummer cockeral by crossing them with the gold. its going to be hard to get hold of these bule red wyandottes. if any1 breeds them with a spare hen or eggs i could buy from you would be great. atleast i have a starting point now to focus on

Very hard. But plain blues should be easier. Mate the offspring back to Welsummers and 25% should come Blue Gold Duckwing.

i would love him, but im only 18, and only been driving just over a year, so essex might be a bit far.. hmmm i relli want him though  Smiley

what do you think to adding a splash to a gold cockeral.
im thinking splash maran... should keep the gold, turn the black chest blue, keep egg colour, ear lobe, would only need to work on leg colour, and feathers on legs if i get a french one.
