Floor inside the house?
Mar 9th, 2010 at 11:27pm

Hubby is building me a new chicken shed for my birthday pressie and my Leghorns, if i ever find any that is... Cheesy
But i am a little unsure whats the best setup for the inside of the house.  Some seem to have slats all over, on half or non at all...  What works best?
Any pictures would be great.

Slats or sturdy weldmesh floor works well as far as economising on bedding goes, but is not so good if you want to use the underneath of the coop as part of the run. It's best to collect and remove the droppings somehow. I'm going back to solid plywood floor with corrugated cardboard underneath the bedding. It's dead easy to clean out then, and I'm pretty sure it helped keep redmite at bay. You do need a good source of cardboard though, as you need to replace it at least once a monthish or you would be helping the redmite, not getting rid of them.
Originally I had intended lining the floor with lino, so as to be easy to clean, but somehow never did.  Roll Eyes

I think it's yet another of those things where everyone has their own way of doing it.  Wink

We have a solid floor in our older coop with some perches to the sides.  I think we will probably go with the same sort of flooring then, but will be having a droppings tray and perches over the tray, does that make sense  Undecided.

A new house you lucky thing. My vote goes with the lino, I've lined all the houses with lino and once a month take it out and scrub it and  powder underneath. It makes your floor look like new for years and easy to scrape any muck up. Try your local freecycle to see if anyone it getting rid or any. perches above a droppings board is also a big time saver especially in winter.

I have been waiting long enough for it, 2 years it has taken him.  I did help him along by saying all i want for my birthday is a new coop and a new incy, which is ordered.  A suro, all very exciting.  Also ordered the wood and had it delivered.  So to regain his garage space he needs to get building  Wink  He actually started it today and seems to be coming along quite well...hehe.

We were thinking about Lino and we are having our kitchen redone which has a Lino floor.  That will be coming up so i think i will give it a go.

I wonder how big the Omlet Cube perches are.  That would be nicer than wood ones, much easier to clean.  Probably completley the wrong size.

My vote goes for solid plywood and straw; which I clear out every 3/4 days. Yearly creosote.

Slats get mucky, droppings boards you have to lift out and clean so eventually I went for the easiest option for me. But like earlier posters said, it's what suits you.

I also put lino on the dropping board below the perches scrap it off daily then  just take outside every few days and scrub, dries quickly. the lino on the floor goes up the wall a couple of inches so the shavings doesn't get under it. but in the small houses it is less of a problem so the lino is cut to size.
