Can he cover them all?
Mar 10th, 2010 at 10:19am

Do you think a large 8 month old very active RIR cockerel could cover 9 hens? I am more interested in him fertilizing the Light sussex and RIR hens but he also has 4 brown hens in with him, is there a chance he would prefer to mate the browns or do you think he will make the rounds?

Thanks Emma xx

My big Ixworth roo has 6 ladies and im sure he would be happy with a few more. Fertility has been 100%. Can see it being a problem.

My "bible" states that a good cockerel can cope with 10 - 20 ladies (now that's set me daydreaming!)

The brown hens always seem to be 'easier' in comparison to other breeds. So you might get excellent fertility in the browns and lesser so among the rest. Remember a rooster always has his favourites. Roll Eyes

Grin

Thats what i thought  Undecided he has been with the brown hens for a number of weeks now and has only been introduced to his new wifes (the rhodies). I did see him treading the Rhode girls last night when i put them in together but he seems to hang around with his original flock alot more.

I might seperate the browns as i have the space now for a few weeks and see how he goes.

Thanks for the input

My friends had had a light sussex lad in with 22 brown layers, one went broody and nearly all the eggs hatched! So guess it just depends how randy the lad is haha!

Our boys manage 6-8 girls no problem despite what some people say about Orps only managing 2-3 girls max. However we rotate the cockerels so that they have a week in the breeding pen and one week off so after a week away from the girls they are very keen to get back with them Wink.

It's all very well daydreaming, but could you cope with 20 ladies in the real world!  Roll Eyes

My orps haven't heard about the 2/3 restriction and would like me to make it clear that 10-20 (each) is not a problem.

They would also like to add that this includes chasing hens over two acres and seeing off various small Pekin cockerels who wish to make their lives easier by helping out. Bonking goes on from dawn to dusk with small breaks for refuelling; arguing with the goats & guarding whilst hens are laying. Fertility is 100 %.

Obviously a trick question..............

Please select your answer from the following:

Answer A:   The one I've got is more than enough!

Answer B:   The chance would be a fine thing!

Answer C:   At my age, medicinal assistance may be required!

Answer D:   Fantasies don't disappoint, where the real thing can!
