Eucalyptus Wood Chips
Feb 28th, 2011 at 6:49pm

Me again! My friendly tree surgeon has offered me some free eucalyptus wood chippings. Are these suitable for my run? I declined the rhododendron chippings due to advice given to me on this forum in a previous post.

Thanks for your advice.

ohh i bet they will smell rather nice!!

Eucalyptus oil is poisionous to cats and dogs, toxic to the liver if ingested, however this list has it on the safe list

Eucalyptus essential oil is obtained from fresh leaves
I think it would be well nigh impossible for a bird to suck any oil out of a wood chip.
It may be possible for these chips to deter things like mites, if I was offered them I wouldn't pass them up.

Grin Grin Grin
I think I would definately use them aswell, would smell lovely.
When i started out with chickens i would sprinkle the bedding with a bit of eucalyptus and tea tree to deter mites. They are long past such luxuries now  Roll Eyes

There is a new variant of Hemcore/Aubiose I have seen advertised recently (possibly in this months PP magazine?) which I'm sure was eucalyptus scented? I'll see if I can find out more. It seems highly unlikley that they could sell such a product if it was toxic to chooks. Huh

OK - just found it - it is called Hempbed-E and has eucalyptus pellets added. Smiley

Too late for the eucalyptus wood chips. I had to let him know this morning so cancelled before I went to work - no internet access where I work. I rang him when I got home and had checked the forum but he had already offloaded the wood chips. I am down for his next load of wood chips as long as they are suitable for the chickens.

Thank you to everyone who responded to my post
